Aida at the Lensic Theater, Santa Fe

The Metropolitan Opera's Production of Aida

The owner of the company that I work for and his wife generously gave me tickets to see the Metropolitan Opera's HD simulcast of Verdi's Aida that was presented at the Lensic Theater in downtown Santa Fe.

I think that the Met has been doing these HD simulcasts for a couple of years—this is the first one that I have seen. If you are interested, you can check out the Met's simulcast website here.

The Lensic Theater

Basically the Met does live HD satellite broadcasts to theaters all over the world. It is a lot like that candy bar transportation device in Willy Wonka.

I only have a couple of things to say about the experience.

The first thing is wow. I was a little skeptical about watching a glorified movie of an opera, but it really was the next-best thing to being in one of the best seats at the Met. I have since found a lot of very favorable reviews.

The second is OMG!!! this friggin thing is like FOUR HOURS!! long. It is sooo long that there are TWO intermissions!

Hey Verdi—what the hell were you thinking—show-off much? (this thing has actual HORSES in it!). I know that back in the day you didn't have much happening on a Saturday afternoon but come on, really?, four hours?!

Well, needless to say, an unfortunate emergency came up and I was not able to see this wonderful production in it's entirety, but the first two and a half hours were pretty spectacular.

For some strange copy-writey thing, the theater would not let me shoot any video of the performance so I have decided to end this post with something I feel is just as special.

The clip below is a lovely and charming duetto from one of my favorite productions of il Silenzo degli Agnelli. I am not sure, but I think it is also by Verdi. This particular production is sung in English (some of the language may be NSFW). Please enjoy...
